Mark Jason Allen: featured on the back cover of the science-fiction magazine Heavy Metal March 2008.
MARK JASON ALLEN Mark Jason Allen is a 37 year-old self-taught artist specializing in fantasy art. Mark started drawing around the age of 3 and it's been his lifelong talent and passion into adulthood. He says that fantasy art is the most enjoyable genre to work in and comes most naturally to him than other genres. Mark pulls his inspiration from both artists and authors alike, citing influences such as P. Craig Russell, Michael T. Gilbert, Robert E. Howard, Michael Moorcock, Jack Kirby, J.R.R. Tolkien, Frank Frazetta, Boris Vallejo, Erol Otis, Larry Elmore, and several other greats of the fantasy genre, as being essential catalysts for his imagery. As a youth in the early 1980's, the images Mark saw within the pages of early Dungeons and Dragons RPG books are what started him on the path of fantasy art. He's been creating scenes of wizards, dragons, and monsters ever since. Mark uses colored pencils, inks, acrylic paints, oil paints, watercolors, airbrush, and computer software to create images of surrealism, high adventure, and the macabre that have appeared in books, magazines, posters, CD packages, T-shirts, cards, games, and much more...even tattoos. Occasional computer generated effects mixed with traditional mediums add a look of depth and dimension to his illustrations. Sometimes Mark works fully digital, for broader control of the work at hand. Whether it's done with ink, paint, pencil, or on a computer screen, it can't be denied that Mark creates fantastical imagery, and dark visions, that inspire the imagination. Focused use of light and shadow, as well as a knack for freezing action, gives his creations a feeling of motion and drama. Mark is a fledgling of two years in the freelancing of his art. In that short time his work already appears in publications by Troll Lord Games, Dungeons & Dragons creator Gary Gygax, Mindgene, LLC, Mindforge Games, New Dimension Games, horror author G.L. Giles, Chenault & Gray Publishing, and several CD releases for Hedonism Records. Mark grew up in Mundelein, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago (USA), and now resides in the lakeshore city of Racine, Wisconsin, just south of Milwaukee (USA).
